In some ways the title of this page is a misnomer, for with two exceptions, all the items listed are concerned with Captain James Cook’s third, fatal, voyage of discovery (1776–1779). The views are by John Webber (1752–1793), the young artist who accompanied Cook, and their publication in London on Webber’s return must have created a sensation, for this would have been the first time the public was able to see such representations of the islands of the Pacific and their peoples.

The plates were reproduced by a number of publishers, in a variety of sizes. Curiously, some are reversed. Most of our reproductions were engraved from Webber’s originals by Hawkins, and published by Alexander Hogg at the Kings Arms, Paternoster Row. We believe these to be the first printing. Others come from Bankes' New System of World Geography. Original size is approximately 13" x 9" (330mm x 230mm). These are special and unusual engravings, of great historical interest.

THREE VIEWS OF ARCHED POINT ON KERGUELEN’S LAND: this desolate and remote island in the far south of the Indian Ocean was discovered by the Breton captain Yves de Kerguelen-Trémarec in February 1772 whilst searching for the ‘Great Southern Continent’ on behalf of Louis XV of France, although he never succeeded in landing on it. Captain Cook arrived here and began explorations on Christmas Day 1776, although, with due respect to his fellow-explorer, he refrained from renaming the islands.
