Published c.1750 to illustrate Nicholas Tindal’s translation
and continuation of the great History of England by Paul de Rapin-Thoyras (1661–1725),
the original maps are now rare and expensive collector’s items, particularly
those which survive in good condition. They cover the period of the War of the
Spanish Succession (1700–1713), the town plans showing the complex Vauban
fortifications in minute detail; in addition, those of Tournai, Douai, Toulon
and Bethune show the siege works and lines of attack (the map of Tournai also
lists the Allied regiments). The originals, drawn and engraved by Isaac Basire
(1704–1768), are truly superlative copper engravings, as one might expect
from this great master of the craft, and our reproductions, printed on high-quality
art paper, will be of interest both to those who take a delight in beautiful maps
for their own sake as well as to military historians and war gamers.
The maps are reproduced at full original size—qpproximately
19"x15" (480mm x 380mm)., The town plans are mostly scaled at 0.875"
(23mm) to 100 toises, a toise being an old French measurement equivalent to 6.395
feet (slightly less than 2 metres); however, as the mapmaker gives it as both
5 feet and 6 feet, it is only possible to give a very approximate modern equivalent,
i.e., 1" to 400 yards (1: 14400).
