Our selection now spreads over three pages, and includes eight
maps and over twenty views.
Maps include two fine plans of Dresden, both from about 1840,
Lower Saxony, Pomerellen and Prussia (two maps are included for historical interest,
as they are of areas returned to Poland after WWII). Unless stated otherwise,
all are reproduced on heavyweight A3 Super paper
Most of the views are reproduced from original steel engravings
of drawings by two nineteenth-century English artists, Clarkson Stanfield and
William Tombleson, published in the 1830s (the Tomblesons are from a renowned
series of illustrations of the Rhine and Upper Rhine). Other artists represented
include Samuel Prout, W. H. Bartlett, David Roberts (best known for his drawings
of the Near and Middle East), Birket Foster, and, last but by no means least, J. M. W. Turner, whose depiction of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress at Coblenz is
really splendid. There are also prints by two German artists, B. Schwarz and Peter
Becker.
Unless stated otherwise, all prints are on fine-quality heavyweight
(135gsm-170gsm) A4 paper, with an image size of approximately 7.5" x 5"/190mm
x 130mm, in most cases representing a slight increase on that of the originals.
