ATH.This map and the four below are reproduced from superb copper-engraved originals fromTindal’s Continuation of Rapin’s History of England, published c. 1745: Wonderfully detailed, they show A truly showing the towns as they were during the War of the Spanish Succession, with their complex Vauban fortifications. Printed on A2 (292 mm x 229mm) paper. In addition to these maps, plans of Bethune, Dunkirk, Douai, Lille and several others are available from either our France or Rapin pages.

We don’t as yet have any information on the publisher or engraver of this and the map of Ghent below, but they are English, and, from the extent of the railways, can be dated to the late 1860s or early 1870s. Very clear and detailed street plans with comprehensive listings of principlal churches, buildings and other sites of interest.
