We consider these to be some of our most attractive maps, of particular interest to the student of ancient history and the antiquarian, but extremely decorative in their own right. Unless otherwise stated, they are reproduced on heavyweight A3 Super paper (13"x19"/329mm x 483mm).

We are looking to expand this range considerably in the future, so if you do not find what you require today, please bookmark this page and come back in a little while. Alternatively, if there is a map or view you are particularly keen to have, let us know and we shall try to find it and add it to our list.

DESCRIPTION DE L’ANCIENNE-GAULE, c.1780: 21"x14.5" (525mm x 370mm). This map and ANC8-10 are taken from Claude Buy de Mornas’ Atlas Méthodique et Elementaire de Geographie et l'Histoire, published in 1756. The history and geography are on the whole both decidedly dubious, but the maps, from the de luxe edition of the atlas, are extremely attractive, with beautiful decorated borders. In this case the map is of Ancient Gaul (not as detailed as ANC6 above). The left-hand column has a historical summary, the right a list of ancient locations within the map, with their modern names.

HISTOIRE DES GOMERITES, OU CELTES, c.1780: 21"x14.5" (525mm x 370mm). The map shows Europe. North Africa and Asia Minor. The left-hand column describes the Celts (or Gomerites, descendants of Japeth, son of Noah, who appears to be equated here with the Titan Iapetus), the right has a history beginning with Uranus and continuing through Saturn (Cronos). The fittingly eccentric chronology (based on Bishop Ussher’s?) begins with ‘An du monde 1921’.

SUITE DE L’HISTOIRE DES GOMERITES, c.1780: 21"x14.5" (525mm x 370mm). The map shows Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor, divided as follows: Partage de Pluton ensuite de Mercurie; Partage de Jupiter; Partage de Neptune; Partage de Japet et de son Fils Atlas. The text, condensed from Diodorus and Herodotus, starts with an account of Jupiter’s war with the Titans, continues through the Great Flood of Deucalion, and ends with an account of the early Scythians.

EMPIRE DE NINUS ET DE SEMIRAMIS/EMPIRE DE SESOSTRIS, c.1780: 21"x14.5" (525mm x 370mm). Two maps, set between two columns of descriptive text. The upper shows the legendary Assyrian Empire of Ninus (Nimrud) and Semiramis, the lower the Egyptian Empire of the Pharoah Sesostris, apparently stretching as far as Bengal! The accompanying commentary is entitled ‘Histoire-profane depuis la Vocation d’Abraham jusqu’a la Loi-écrite’.

POMPEII: a lovely map of the city. The original was drawn by W. B. Clarke and engraved by T. E. Nicholson, and published by Baldwin & Cradock of Paternoster Row, London, in July 1832. In addition to a coloured street map with a key to the buildings, there is a plan of the House of Pansa (Domus Pansæ), a very clear inset map of the area around Vesuvius, a series of small elevation drawings of how the principal buildings might have appeared, and a panoramic view of the excavations at the foot of the page. Superb. Map size 15" x 13" (380mm x 330mm).
